How my 2-year old Overcame Illness Naturally

[Stepping on my soap box] I’ll admit I’m not much for conventional medicine/intervention unless absolutely necessary. I always try natural remedies first, and I’m proud (and grateful!!!) to say my son will be 3 in January and he’s never been on antibiotics or medications other than the occasional Tylenol or Motrin.  Please note: I believe there is a time and a place for conventional medical intervention and medications. We have the best emergency care and surgeons in the world, and I value these folks who save lives! That being said, natural is best whenever possible. With proper nutrition, herbs, movement, fresh air, clean water, good hygiene, shelter and emotional stability, our bodies are able overcome a lot if we give ourselves and our children the tools they need to heal and thrive. I have seen it time and time again, and I speak from personal and professional experience [Stepping off my soap box].

The transition of summer into fall and fall into winter are primo sick times! Our bodies are naturally cleansing and preparing us to hibernate for the winter.  If our kids go to school or daycare; then they’re even more exposed to the illnesses circulating.

My son’s preschool called and said our son had a 103.9 fever. We picked him up and gave him Tylenol to get his fever down to a manageable 100 (allowing the body to have a low temperature actually helps fight illness. We get fevers for a reason! But once it creeps up to 102, I’ll admit I get nervous and give him something to bring it down). I also use peppermint essential oil along his spine and the bottoms of his feet.

The following day he developed a cough, waking up in the middle of the night coughing and crying (likely because his throat and chest hurt). He then developed a little bark at the end of his cough, which freaked me out because I thought he might be getting pneumonia, croup, whooping cough or bronchitis.  Dr. Google led me down a path of parenting freak-out, and I almost brought him to the doctor but then decided to try a few natural remedies and bring him later that day or the following morning if he didn’t improve.

Here’s what I did:

A vitamin C flush drink that I had him drink every hour until bowel tolerance (about 3 hours):

My little concoction:

1/2 tsp. camu powder (all natural vitamin C containing 60 times the amount of an orange! More on camu powder below)

1 tsp. Amazing Grass greens (Kids berry flavored)

1/2 tsp. Bragg’s raw apple cider vinegar

1/2 tsp. Probiotic Synergy powder (80% of the immune system is in the gut!)

2000 IU vitamin D liquid

1/2 tsp. local raw honey

Small sprinkle of cayenne pepper, turmeric & ginger organic spice

Himalayan or Celtic sea salt (added minerals!)

I also did this:

1 Probioimmune lozenge per day

Silversillin spray

Immunoberry Liquid

OmegAvail Lemon Drop (Omega-3 fatty acids)

Nettle & red raspberry leaf tea with raw honey

On guard essential oil, thyme & oregano (natural antibiotic) on the bottoms of his feet 3 times per day.

Thyme, Breathe and On guard in his diffuser all night and for naps & the same oils diffusing in the main area during the day.

Breathe vapor rub on his chest.

LOTS of water.

Lifestyle:

A humidifier in his room for naps and bedtime.

Walks with him bundled in the stroller for fresh air.

Lots of cuddles

Good sleep schedule. We heal during sleep!

Nutrition:

Organic applesauce with 1 Tbs. collagen powder, fulvic acid, cinnamon, 1 tsp. chia seeds, sprouted pumpkin seeds (high in zinc!).

Organic meats (vitamin A)

Eggs (vitamin A) cooked in coconut oil and Himalayan sea salt

Sweet potatoes w/ cinnamon and coconut oil (vitamin A)

Smoothies with protein powder, avocado and all the goodies above

The Verdict:

Within hours of this protocol, our son started showing serious improvement in his energy and a reduction in coughing. The bark completely went away. The previous two nights he got up several times in the night, and after this protocol he slept soundly for 12 hours straight until 7:30am the following morning. The following day he was back to being himself and just coughing up leftover mucous. We are on the up and up!

OKAY, I know this sounds like a lot! And you don’t have to do it all. Me being the health nut that I am just wanted to cover all of my bases. I also did not want to make a trip to the doctor or have him sick over Thanksgiving, so I was motivated to try everything! Even just trying a few remedies is beneficial. Even if you have to use conventional meds, it’s nice to support the body with probiotics and other nutrients.

  1. Thank you for sharing this in so much detail. Each time one of my guys starts to get a little cruddy I frantically search for this post! This morning each of them is a bit under the weather so I’m keeping all of them home for a flush. And plenty of rest and snuggles.
